A carpet is a fashionable element of a modern interior, designed to perform not only decorative, but also practical functions. With its help, you can add completeness to any space, transform the appearance of the room and set the desired mood. We’ll tell you why the fashion for carpets in the interior has returned, what criteria should be used to choose a product, and how to place it correctly.

Why do you need a carpet in the interior

Carpet in interior design is used to solve the following problems:

  • Adjustment of visual perception of space. Depending on the shape, size and ornament, a carpet can visually increase or decrease the volume of a room, as well as adjust the configuration of the room.

  • Zoning. A carpet is indispensable if you need to divide a space into several functional areas. This is especially true for studios, open-plan apartments and large spaces.

  • Creating a cozy atmosphere. Carpets give an unsurpassed feeling of comfort and warmth in the home. You can walk around the room barefoot, play on the floor with your child, or sit comfortably in front of the TV with decorative pillows on the carpet.

  • Creating accents. Using a rug is the easiest way to introduce bright, active colors and patterns into your interior. Other decorative elements of similar colors will help support the accent piece - for example, a painting or decorative pillows.

Advantages and disadvantages of using carpets in the interior

The advantages of using carpets in the interior are associated not only with their decorative capabilities. They also perform a number of practical functions:

  • Hide the imperfections of the floor covering. A carpet can mask floor unevenness, as well as scuffs, stains, scratches and chips that form on the flooring over time. In addition, the carpet will effectively protect it from new damage.

  • Makes the floor warmer. The carpet retains heat due to its high thermal insulation properties. Products with high pile and high weaving density perform the best thermal insulation function.

  • Provide sound insulation. The carpet muffles sounds, preventing them from spreading throughout the room. It can be used in apartments where it is necessary to remove echo and reduce the influence of various noise sources: small children, dogs, TV, loud music, etc.

Carpets and rugs have only one drawback. Dust and dirt accumulate on them, so they require proper care. To maintain cleanliness, it is necessary to regularly vacuum the carpet, remove stains and dirt as soon as they appear, and periodically carry out deep cleaning.

Main characteristics of carpets

In modern interiors, different types of carpets are used, which differ in material, shape, pile height and other parameters.

Material

Carpets are made from natural, mixed and synthetic materials:

  • Viscose. Synthetic viscose fiber does not cause allergic reactions and has high abrasion resistance. The surface of a viscose carpet is soft and silky. These are lightweight products that do not accumulate static electricity and retain heat well.

  • Polyester. Another synthetic fiber that is used to make carpets. Polyester lends itself well to dyeing and retains its color saturation for a long time. This is a wear-resistant material that is easy to maintain.

  • Wool. Natural material that provides a pleasant tactile sensation. Wool carpets are famous for their durability - with proper care they can last for several decades without losing their appearance. To improve performance characteristics, synthetic fibers are often added to wool carpets.

  • Natural materials: bamboo, cotton. Bamboo silk is a relatively new type of material that is becoming increasingly popular. When making carpets, bamboo fiber is woven with cotton or wool warp threads. The surface of the products is silky and well textured. A good option for an eco-friendly interior would be light and soft cotton carpets. The natural material is hypoallergenic, so these products are ideal for children and allergy sufferers.

Shape

Rectangular carpets are the most common models, allowing you to emphasize the correct geometry of the room and, if necessary, carry out zoning. But such specimens are not suitable for very elongated rooms.

Oval models can also visually make a room longer. They are ideal for interiors that use round-shaped furniture. Round carpets look impressive, allowing you to enliven an overly austere environment.

Pile height

There are three types of carpets based on pile height:

  • short pile - up to 0.5 cm;

  • medium pile - from 0.5 to 1 cm;

  • long pile - from 1 cm and above.

In the most trafficked places, it is better to use more practical products with short pile, which are easier to clean from dirt. Long pile carpets provide good sound insulation, but they will require careful care and attention.

Some models may have a combination of short and long pile areas. This technique of combining textures allows you to create original patterns and ornaments on the surface.

Density

The density of a carpet shows how many knots of pile there are in a certain unit of area. The most beautiful, wear-resistant carpets are models with a high density. Thanks to the close arrangement of the fibers, precise and well-detailed patterns are obtained. In addition, products with high density provide better heat and sound insulation.

Manufacture method

There are two types of carpet products on the market - machine-made and hand-made. Handmade carpets are exclusive products with a unique pattern. One of the varieties is woven carpets, which are made on special looms. They have a high density, a distinct pattern and are characterized by high wear resistance.

Machine-made carpets offer an incredible variety of materials, colors and designs. They are made from natural, synthetic and blended threads. Automated technologies make it possible to significantly speed up and reduce the cost of the manufacturing process.

Using carpets in different rooms

Carpets will be appropriate in rooms of any purpose if they are chosen and positioned correctly.

Carpets in the living room

In the living room, a carpet can be used to zone or visually highlight a piece of furniture standing on it. In the second case, the size of the product should significantly exceed the furniture installed on it.

A carpet laid close to the walls visually reduces the space. If you need to carpet your entire living room, it is better to place it a short distance from the wall to make the room seem larger. If you have an elongated living room, the proportions of the room can be corrected with the help of square carpets laid in a row.

For the living room, products with medium-length pile would be a good solution. The design of the carpet must be selected based on the objectives. Light-colored models will provide comfort, but will not be conspicuous and draw attention to themselves. A patterned rug will help tie the whole color scheme together. A product in bright colors is good for creating an accent.

Carpets in the bedroom

In the bedroom, you can select a sleeping area by placing the bed on a large long-pile carpet. The second option is to lay a small rug on the side of the bed to make it more comfortable to get up in the morning. A small-sized product that matches the overall concept of the interior will also be appropriate near the dressing table.

Carpet in the children's room

Children often play on the floor, so a carpet is a must-have element in a children's room. It is better to use products made from hypoallergenic synthetic materials that attract less dust. For a children's room, it is advisable to opt for short-pile carpeting to ensure tactile comfort.

Kitchen carpet

Carpets are rarely placed in the kitchen, since there is a wet area there, and the product will quickly lose its appearance from constant exposure to moisture. But if this room is combined with a dining room, a carpet can be laid under the table to shift the emphasis from the working to the dining area. In this case, a lint-free product made from synthetic fibers is suitable, from which stains can be easily removed.

The Garda Decor online store offers exclusive designer carpets that allow you to create a fashionable and attractive interior. Our managers will help you choose a product that matches the style and purpose of the room, and give professional advice on its placement.
