Given: a small room, usually a one-room apartment or studio, sofa and a bed.

Task: arrange the furniture so that there is enough space to highlight several functional areas - the living room and the bedroom.

Agree, it is not easy to implement such an idea. How to allocate a place for rest and work, combine a corner of peace and quiet with a location for an active and fun pastime? The functions of the zones are different, but even in this situation there is a solution. And in this article we will find it with you.

Advantages and disadvantages of a living room-bedroom

Let’s immediately make a reservation that combining a bed and a sofa in the same room is a necessary measure. But it has its advantages:

  • a separate sleeping area with an orthopedic mattress, which does not have to be constantly assembled after sleep, and again disassembled and covered in the evening;

  • opportunity to organize space for an office, dressing room, children's room in other rooms;

  • A great way to add originality and comfort to your interior.

True, this decision also has negative sides. After all, even if there is a partition, privacy will not be possible. And if you went to bed, then guests, the TV on and general noise will interfere with proper rest. The same applies to situations if there is a workplace nearby, where, for example, there is a computer or a sewing machine.

Proper planning allows you to minimize these disadvantages. The space will look comfortable and homely if it is not overloaded with objects, and the zoning of the area is done using lighting, color accents, various textiles and textures.

Layout Features

It is important to adhere to the general style in each zone. That is, the size and shape of the bed should be proportional to the parameters of the sofa, so as not to focus on one thing. The headboard is usually placed against the wall. This way the bedroom will not cause psychological discomfort and will not become a passageway.

Calm colors should be the basic ones, but there is no room for dynamics, so they should be diluted with geometric prints and bright colors. There are no style restrictions as such, but it is better to avoid excessive strictness. Glossy facades, light shades, mirrors, good decor, compact furniture - all this visually expands the boundaries of the room, filling it with light and air.

But remember that if the bed is of a classic design, then the sofa should not be asymmetrical. And even more so to be larger in size. And, of course, their functional purpose must be clearly visible - this is the key to the correct division of the room.

Methods of arranging furniture

Previously, there were fewer difficulties - you just buy a folding sofa. Fold it up - and the place for receiving guests is ready. Lay it out and you can go to bed. But today this option is less popular because the rooms do not have bulky walls, and because rest on such a surface is mediocre. Therefore, for ourselves we choose a full-fledged bed, and for guests we look for a corner where the sofa will fit.

The arrangement could be as follows:

  • on one wall. Realistically, if the length of the room allows. Then we put the furniture in one row, this simplifies the approach to it and increases convenience. But we immediately forget about privacy;

  • in parallel. This is how they do it in Scandinavia: there is a bed on one wall and a sofa on the other. This allows you to free up quite a decent space where you can arrange a dining room or office. But privacy still suffers;

  • at an angle to each other. If the bed is placed along the wall, it takes up a minimum of free space. And by placing it in a niche, the savings are even greater. But if the sofa is placed perpendicular to the sleeping place, then there will be no convenient approach, plus ergonomics will suffer;

  • island. Usually the bed is placed behind the back of the sofa, but if desired, you can turn it the other way around. It will lose its privacy status, but passage will be free. An island arrangement will allow you to place a cabinet or desk, but it looks good in spacious rooms;

  • attic. In this case, there is a sofa on the first floor, and a bed on the second. This option is considered youth, but is a great space saver. If the design is reliable, then there are no questions about safety.

How and with what to zone?

Designers advise adhering to the following principle: one function is a priority, and everything else is subordinate to it. That is, we arrange everything unimportant taking into account the main thing. We adhere to a single style and select furniture that is similar in shape, texture, and color.

Zones can be distinguished in various ways. Some require the installation of additional structures and even redevelopment, while others are easy to implement with minimal financial costs. Which option is yours?

Constructive techniques

Niche. If there is such space in the room, a bed is installed here, covered with curtains or a decorative partition and, if possible, complemented with cabinets and shelves.

Podium. A solution for small rooms that also provides space for storage. But you need a special, mobile bed. If the ceiling allows, then a sleeping place can be arranged under it.

Curtains. By closing them, we get a cozy space, hidden from prying eyes. In addition, it is inexpensive, fast and without major installation work. And you don't even need additional space.

Partition. Desirable for rooms from 20 sq. m, since all other half-measures are not enough in this situation. The material can be plasterboard, plywood, chipboard. The wardrobe and shelving unit will have the same functionality. You can also use glass, which will add space and natural light.

Visual techniques

Color accents. Usually, wallpaper of similar tones is selected. The living room, for example, is made brighter, and the bedroom more subdued. Background and accent colors may overlap.

Different finishes. The floors should not sharply contrast with each other, but if a partition is installed, then for the bedroom they can be matched to it. If a curtain is used, it is better that the floor covering is not broken into pieces. When zoning using a ceiling, you can choose a multi-level tension structure. For walls, it is permissible to combine panels and wallpaper, plaster and lining.

Lighting. Daylight is recommended for the recreation area, but additional lighting is needed everywhere and at any time. You can mount point light sources around the perimeter, install a floor lamp, hang sconces, or attach an LED strip. The chandelier is hung in the center of the living room, but not in the bedroom.

Useful tips

The bedroom-living room should look spacious, which means that there is a minimum of furniture here. At the renovation stage, you can order built-in models or a bed that will extend from the podium.

Regardless of the interior style, a screen will never be superfluous. It can be wooden, fabric, rattan or glass. It is easy to move, and if desired, can be made accent. In addition to the bed, put shelves for books and cabinets in the niche, and it’s easy to hide all this behind the curtains.

A partition gives maximum privacy, but if it is from ceiling to floor, then there will be virtually no natural light in the living room. Therefore, panels with slots are good in this case. A wardrobe or bookcase can act as a partition. The main thing is that it does not look bulky.

If you have a loggia, then it can also expand the boundaries of the room. This is an excellent place to arrange a dressing room, bar counter, or office. And if it is also large, then you can organize a sleeping place. However, remember that this is already a redevelopment and you will need to obtain special permission.
