  4. Designer tips for choosing a table

A desk is a piece of furniture that is useful in every home. You can read, be creative, work, do homework with it. The design takes up little space, fits harmoniously into the interior of even a small room and does not require frequent replacement. There are many requirements for such furniture: it must be comfortable, functional, practical, and pleasant in design. Particular attention should be paid to the dimensions of the table: choosing them correctly will help maintain vision and posture. In order for the purchase to meet your expectations, it is worth finding out what types of desks are divided into, what else to consider when choosing a suitable model, and how to place a desk in the interior.

Types of desks

If in the last century desks were quite bulky, today they have gotten rid of unnecessary details and have become lighter than their predecessors. Structurally, furniture intended for the work area consists of a frame with or without legs, a table top, drawers of various sizes and configurations. Some products are additionally equipped with compartments for a PC and pull-out shelves for a keyboard. Classification of desks is carried out according to the following criteria.

Design features

Depending on the design features and functionality, the following types of tables are distinguished:

  • Standard. A classic table usually has a rectangular shape and is made in the form of a working panel on supports. The storage system in standard tables is located on the right, and in some cases also on the left side. The design can have add-ons in the form of open shelves and racks - this model is optimal if the furniture will be placed against the wall in a study or other room. In home workshops, tables with an additional retractable table top are in demand, doubling the usable area.

  • Built-in. Built-in models require fixation to any base: a cabinet, a wall. As a rule, they consist of several blocks and represent a complete system for work, helping to save space and accommodating everything you need.

  • Transforming table. Transformable tables can have adjustable heights, a folding top, and pull-out shelves.

The choice is influenced by the area of the room, the purpose of the structure, and the age of the person who needs the table. If furniture is purchased for the entire period of a student’s studies, a transforming model will be an ideal option.

Material of manufacture

Among the popular materials from which desks are made are:

  1. Solid wood. Massive tables are made from natural wood that fit perfectly into a presentable environment, for example, an executive’s office. This design weighs a lot, but lasts for decades.

  2. MDF. Tables made from MDF are environmentally friendly, increased durability, and come in a variety of colors. Furniture made from fibreboard fits into any interior style, and its design is often not inferior to natural wood.

  3. Glass. The advantages of glass desks are visual lightness, stylish design, and the ability to add light and volume to the space. There is no need to be afraid that the table will be too fragile: the tabletops are made of tempered glass and covered with a protective film. However, such tables are still not recommended for children's rooms. Even the strongest glass may not withstand the impact of a transforming robot.

  4. Metal. Reliable and durable metal is most often combined with other materials: glass, wood. A table with metal elements that have a pleasant shine and do not lose their aesthetic properties will look great in an exclusive designer interior.

If you need a simple, inexpensive model for a couple of years, you can limit yourself to a desk made of chipboard, a practical and easy-to-clean material.

Sizes and shapes of modern desks

The ease of use of a desk directly depends on the size and shape. When selecting the dimensions of the structure, it is recommended to adhere to the following standards:

  • The length of the table top is at least a meter, otherwise there will be little free space for hands in the work area.

  • Depth – from 50 to 60 cm. This depth is quite enough for comfortable work.

  • Height is at least 70 cm, but this figure is adjusted to the person’s height. The calculation formula looks like this: height in centimeters is multiplied by 75 and divided by 175. When a person sits at a table, the distance from the eyes to the working surface should be 30-35 cm.

The most common table shapes are rectangular and corner. Models of the second type are suitable for studio apartments and other small spaces. Buyers who want to create an original interior can pay attention to non-standard designs. For example, tables with a rounded top minimize the risk of bruises, round tables look elegant and bring zest to the interior, and U-shaped ones go perfectly with a laconic setting.

Options for using a table in different rooms

The use of a table in different rooms also has its own characteristics.

Living room

Not too bulky functional tables with a laconic design are suitable for living rooms. This could be the simplest model without drawers or a design with a small add-on in the form of a pair of shelves - it all depends on the size and layout of the room.

When choosing a place for a table, be sure to take into account the level of illumination. If the room is dark or it is not possible to place furniture near the window, you will have to equip local lighting or choose a table with lighting.

Bedroom

For bedrooms, as a rule, desks of traditional shapes and compact sizes are selected. It’s good if there is a niche in the bedroom - this is an ideal place for arranging a work area.

A great place for a table is the space near the bedroom window. While working or being creative, owners will be able to draw inspiration from picturesque views of the city. If there is a need for additional workspaces, you can combine the table with a spacious chest of drawers or shelving.

Children's room

For children's rooms, multifunctional designs with add-ons and retractable cabinets, products with retractable legs with a work surface that can change the height and angle of inclination are optimal. If there are two children in the family, you can use long double models. And we must not forget about the chairs. The back of a “correct” chair should have an anatomical shape so that children develop healthy posture.

Kitchen

There is also space for a desk in the kitchen. Since most kitchens are modest in size, you should opt for a folding or hanging model. If the layout of the home allows, the desk can become an extension of the window sill.

Office

Office desks and secretarial desks look great in offices equipped for working from home. Every thing in them will be in its place, which is very important for a comfortable work process. The table can be located either by the window or in the corner - in the latter case, you will be able to effectively use every centimeter of space.

Designer tips for choosing a table

When choosing a desk, you should listen to the advice of experts who know a lot about quality furniture. Here's what interior designers recommend:

  1. You need to focus on the age and needs of the future owner of the table. If a person is busy with work or study, he cannot do without a wide, spacious tabletop. If a table is needed for working at a computer, the emphasis should be on the presence of special niches for the monitor and system unit.

  2. In a small room where there is not enough storage space, a table with many shelves and drawers will be a real salvation. In combination with a comfortable tabletop, it will turn into a full-fledged mini-office.

  3. Dissonance between the area of the room and the size of the table is unacceptable. A bulky table in a small room will look ridiculous, and a miniature model in a spacious hall or large bedroom will simply get lost.

  4. The color of the table should be combined with other colors that dominate the interior. However, you can play up the interior, choose a contrasting color and make the table a standout accent.

  5. Since expressive textures are in trend today, preference should be given to materials such as wood, leather, natural stone or its imitation. An excellent choice would be a desk made of combined materials: for example, a model with elegant chrome legs and a leather top.

  6. Before purchasing, it is important to check the reliability of the structure, including fittings, and also check the surface for scratches and chips. In decorative table decoration, paints and varnishes with components harmful to health should not be used.

  7. Do not be tempted by desks with bright decor. An excess of decorative elements will interfere with concentration and distract from work and study.

  8. If you need two workstations, you can pay attention to a folding transforming table. But we must keep in mind that transforming tables usually do not have drawers.
