It is difficult to arrange a relaxation area without a chair—even a comfortable sofa cannot completely replace this piece of furniture. We'll tell you how to choose a good chair for your home that will provide maximum comfort and decorate your living room.

What to consider when choosing a chair

The main purpose of the chair is comfortable rest. Therefore, the main criterion when choosing is ergonomics, that is, a set of characteristics that take into account the anatomical features of the human body and make upholstered furniture comfortable. What applies to them:

• The presence of a slope. A chair back positioned strictly vertically can cause pain due to constant tension. A slight tilt back will help support the lower back and shoulder blades. It is advisable that the seat is also located at an angle, and not parallel to the floor. The minimum angle between the back and seat of the chair should be 120°.
• Back height. Armchairs with a low back are suitable for use as a comfortable chair - you can just sit in them or do some work at the same time: embroidery, knitting, etc. In this case, the backrest can reach the level of the shoulder blades - the exact height depends on height. For those who like to relax in a chair completely leaning back, options with a high back are suitable, which will provide support for the shoulders and neck.
• Seat width. The standard is considered to be from 50 to 70 cm. In a chair that is too wide, the armrests are located far away, and you will have to stretch. The exact size can be determined by measuring the half-circumference of the hips and adding 10 cm to this figure.
• Seat height. For a person of average height, the optimal height will be 40-50 cm. The lower the seat is, the more difficult it is to stand up, creating unnecessary stress on the leg muscles. If the seat is high, it will be uncomfortable to sit on. 
• Seat depth. When you lean back in your chair, the edge of the seat should not reach the bend of your knees. The average depth is 50 cm.
• Armrests. They should be positioned in such a way that you can rest your elbows freely. Shoulders should not be raised, otherwise there will be additional stress on the neck and shoulders.

Chair frame

Since the chair is purchased for long-term use, when choosing, you need to take into account such parameters as reliability and durability. First of all, they are determined by the materials from which the base is made - the frame structure. In the production of upholstered furniture the following are used:

• Tree. Durable, lightweight and environmentally friendly material. The reliability of wooden frames is largely determined by the quality of raw materials and processing, as well as the accuracy of assembly.

• Metal. Metal frames are reliable, durable and affordable. For their manufacture, materials such as steel or light aluminum alloy can be used.

• MDF and chipboard. The cheapest materials. They do not have the necessary reliability and are not designed for constant loads. Therefore, most often manufacturers combine materials with wood and metal to extend the life of chairs.

Upholstery material for chairs

When choosing a chair, you need to pay attention to the upholstery. The material must have a high wear resistance; in addition, it must be easy to clean from dirt. The most common types of upholstery include:

• Genuine leather. A beautiful, durable and wear-resistant material that does not require complex care - almost any dirt can be removed from the chair with a damp cloth. The disadvantages include the high cost of the material.
• Eco leather. A synthetic analogue of leather, which costs less, but has lower strength and wears out faster.
• Velour. This chair upholstery has a dense, velvety, soft surface. Typically, a polyester-based material is used - synthetic fibers increase strength and increase the service life of the upholstery.

• Matting. The material has a specific checkerboard pattern of thread weaving, which resembles burlap. It is characterized by high strength and abrasion resistance. Despite its appearance, the material is soft and pleasant to the touch.
• Tapestry. High density patterned material woven in a complex cross weave. Most often, this upholstery is used for furniture in a classic style.
• Flock. This is one of the most practical upholstery options for a chair, which is suitable even for those who have pets. 

• Faux fur. Fur as an upholstery material is a new trend in design. A chair with such upholstery looks beautiful, unusual, and adds a feeling of warmth and comfort.
• Chenil. Jacquard fabric with a complex weaving pattern. This is a dense and wear-resistant material, the main feature of which is its velvety surface, which is achieved through chenille threads with fibers. 

Chair filler

The filler forms the basis of the chair and makes it soft, elastic, and is also responsible for durability and protects it from sagging. The most affordable solution is foam rubber. But, at the same time, it is the most short-lived, quickly losing its elasticity and shape. 

Chair design

There are classic and modern models of chairs, with or without additional functions and elements. The design must be tediously selected based on two criteria: convenience and style of the interior of the living room, hallway or children's room. What seat options can be:
