For those who do not want to constantly update their interior in accordance with interior fashion trends, French neoclassicism is an ideal option. Refined, elegant and laconic, it has become a modern embodiment of a beloved classic, but at the same time more suitable for everyday life. Time-tested solutions remain in demand, and if necessary, small local changes are enough to refresh them.

We understand the features of the style

French masters began to form their original design at the beginning of the 16th century under the influence of the “School of Fontainebleau”. It was organized by Francis I, who gathered around himself talented architects, decorators and artists. The 17th–19th centuries are considered to be a landmark period in the development of decorative art, and at the beginning of the 20th, such familiar trends as Provence, Art Nouveau and Art Deco appeared.

French neoclassicism became an interpretation of the classical style and was adapted to the realities of urban housing. For this reason, all solutions are lightweight: simple shapes, textures and materials. This is not a ceremonial design, but created for every day, although in style and features it is close to the conservative classical canon.

Visually, neoclassicism is neutral, which is why it is so easy to incorporate relevant details into it. In this case, you can choose high-quality materials that will replace too expensive ones. The only limitation will be the need for a large space - in small rooms the style feature is lost.

Neoclassical French interior is based on symmetry and accents, proportionality and geometricity. Only clear lines, a small number of accessories, which can be columns, stucco, carving, forging. There may be sculptures and antiques.

Among other distinctive features of neoclassicism:

  • symmetrical arrangement of furniture;

  • muted colors;

  • presence of wood, marble, luxurious textiles;

  • the presence of works of art, large mirrors, carpets;

  • multi-tier lighting;

  • floral motifs in the design.

Excesses and abundance of decor are definitely not for French neoclassicism. The style encourages adherence to a sense of proportion and a careful approach to the choice of certain elements.

Creating space in the aesthetics of French neoclassicism

High ceilings and large windows are a feature that should form the basis of the interior. Further planning is based on the principles of symmetry and compliance with a number of simple rules.

Color scheme

An expensive and sophisticated environment can be created largely through the use of natural shades. The style uses a light palette as a base. In this case, the ceiling should be the lightest and the floor the darkest. They are diluted with colors such as brown, gray, blue, beige, golden and white.

A good option is to go with a natural wood shade. In any case, you should not mix several tones at once: only one will be the main one, and the rest will be played with its shades. There are no bright colors in French neoclassicism.

Materials

Neoclassicism allows for the proximity of natural materials and the same plastic. This feature is complemented by innovative technologies.

  • Walls. The optimal solution would be to paint or apply decorative plaster. The style does not exclude wallpapering, preferably with a strict geometric pattern. Metallized tiles, glass and mirror panels look unusual. For the kitchen, you should give preference to porcelain stoneware or marble slabs.

  • Floor and ceiling. The latter can be multi-level; white or light beige paint is used for decoration. But there is also a place for tension structures here - both matte and glossy. They prefer non-standard lighting to an abundance of decorative elements. You can lay laminate or parquet boards made of ash, oak, or rosewood on the floor. Polished stone and porcelain tiles are appropriate in the kitchen and hallway.

  • Doors and windows. It is desirable that the door leaf be made of natural wood or veneer. Designs with stained glass and glass inserts and carved elements can add sophistication to a French interior. The windows should be panoramic, but if this is not a country house, but an apartment, then at least you should take care of the presence of wide window sills.

Furniture and textiles

Much depends on the personal preferences of the homeowner and the allocated budget. Furniture can be simple or carved. The main thing is that it must remain practical and functional. But given the peculiarity of French neoclassicism - a combination of luxury and restraint, all items cannot be cheap. And when arranging them, one should proceed from the requirement of symmetry. This allows you to avoid clutter and chaos and create the necessary level of comfort. Technical innovations easily fit into such a space.

Textiles rightfully have a special place. Neoclassicism tends to use noble natural fabrics: silk and velvet, satin and linen, leather and suede. The windows can be draped with thick curtains, decorated with lambrequins and carved cornices. If there is a carpet, its color should match the main palette. Both dull monochromatic and products with floral motifs and geometric prints are suitable.

Lighting

The centerpiece is a luxurious chandelier, referencing the aesthetics of classicism and filling the room with light to the maximum. Suitable additions include wall sconces, floor lamps, and table lamps with lampshades. It is not forbidden to use garlands and LED strips. Multi-level lighting scenarios only emphasize the features and advantages of the neoclassical style.

4 style-forming recommendations

Neoclassicism can also change and assimilate with new trends. But you can preserve the style, its originality and peculiarity, regardless of fashion trends, by following the following tips:

1.     Natural colors.

The neoclassical French interior is in many ways reminiscent of the exterior decoration in classicism. This means that preference is given to natural shades, those that we find in nature. Milky, pearlescent, sandy colors can be diluted with turquoise. This creates a reference to the Mediterranean style, but it does not contradict the classics and is considered a successful combination. It is important to avoid energetically strong colors. The overall picture looks monochrome and soft.

2.     Rigor.

From the point of view of being able to create an authentic environment, a space with high ceilings, a spacious living room and a suite of rooms is considered ideal. This makes it easier to build a symmetrical composition in which the fireplace will be the center, and a large frame or mirror is suitable as adjacent elements. This interior exudes aristocracy and dignified laconicism.

When arranging furniture, the principles of sparseness and proportionality are observed: two identical banquettes, armchairs or even windows in a room already create a mirror effect. But remember that the ratio of surfaces covering the walls should not exceed the free space on these walls.

3.     Nobility is in the details.

Items can be ceremonial and solemn, like chairs with oval soft backs and fluted legs, elaborate secretaries and chests of drawers, or simple, minimalistic, modern. Regardless of this, the space should create a feeling of respectability and conservatism.

4.     Minimum accessories.

The best option for decorating a room in accordance with the style is paintings, figurines, mirrors, stucco on the walls, books, table lamps. The emphasis is on certain places, which avoids oversaturation of the situation.
