Apartment interior: design ideas in a modern style

22.02.2023

Content:

Interior design trends in the 21st century are designed to create the most comfortable environment for people. Bulky furniture with bronze legs, rich decoration, and unnaturally bright colors are gradually becoming a thing of the past. Simplicity and naturalness come to the fore in 2023: pastel color palette, smooth lines, comfortable and functional furniture, natural materials. The interior of the apartment in a modern style looks light, fresh and cozy. It combines clarity of form with moderate elegance and plenty of open space. All that remains is to find out how to create such an interior, what other features are characteristic of it, and what famous designers advise.

Modern apartment interior: distinctive features

Technological progress is inexorable, and many people today are forced to live and work in an urban environment. Finding peace of mind in such an environment is not easy, but if you decorate the interior of the apartment with elements of eco-style, it will be conducive to comfortable rest and complete relaxation. Modern interior fashion does not like pretentiousness, eclecticism and disorder - interior design is based on the following rules and principles:

  • Use in the interior any elements that remind a person of a connection with nature: natural stone and wood, living plants, various light sources. If it is impossible to use natural materials, they can be replaced with artificial analogues. This could be, for example, beautiful flower arrangements or imitation lawn grass on the walls.

  • Arrangement of a bright open space in which there are no unnecessary partitions and furniture that does not carry a special functional load.

  • Strict geometry of the interior, in which there should be no unnecessary pretentiousness.

  • Placing works of art in the interior, of course, in moderation.

  • A combination of several lighting options - general, local, decorative. When highlighting separate areas for relaxation, work, and eating, it is advisable to select several stylistically different lamps that will be in harmony with each other. Particularly good in a modern interior are floating structures that allow you to create the illusion of flight, as well as LED lamps mounted in niches, table tops, bed bases, and shelving shelves.

  • The presence of metal surfaces adds sophistication to the interior. Metal in the room can be present in the form of an elegant forged partition, fireplace grille, headboard, furniture or door fittings. Thanks to polished metal, the interior takes on a modern look, and the soft but effective shine of chrome or steel will emphasize the dignity of the home.

  • Neutral color palette with occasional splashes of bright accents. Such color solutions as monochrome color combinations are also welcome.

  • Lack of a large amount of textiles in the interior. For example, a studio apartment can only be decorated with curtains, a cozy blanket and a small carpet on the floor, but they must be of excellent quality.

When decorating the interior design of an apartment, it is permissible to use elements of several stylistic directions. However, a sense of proportion must be observed: an excessively overloaded interior will cause psychological discomfort.

When choosing “clothes” for the window, you should give preference to simple light curtains, blinds or Roman blinds. Complex multi-layer draperies are justified only when functionality requires it - for example, if it is necessary to darken the room.

Furnishing an apartment in a modern style: fashion trends

Furniture in a modern interior should be compact, ergonomic, and functional. Laconic straight lines, open legs of chairs and sofas, and futuristic facades will help you create a stylish modern interior. Individual pieces of interior furniture can have a cylindrical or round shape - this design technique allows you to soften the excessive severity of the interior.

Low chests of drawers and other squat storage systems deserve to take the place of classic cabinets in the interior. The central accent of the living room can be a large sofa - corner or modular, consisting of several blocks. If there is space in the center, you can place a round sofa bed, which will immediately attract the attention of guests. Rounded shapes look elegant, create the illusion of spaciousness and set you up for a comfortable stay. Such furniture looks especially impressive in rooms with a non-standard layout with niches and bay windows.

You can rationally use every centimeter of space using built-in furniture from ceiling to floor. To prevent furniture walls from looking bulky, when developing interior projects, designers use techniques such as combining facades with illuminated display cases made of tinted glass and coating surfaces with white varnish.

The 2023 interior trend is the use of hanging furniture - for non-trivial interiors this is exactly what is needed. We are talking not only about hanging shelves, bookcases and hammocks, which are difficult to surprise anyone with today. Tables, cabinets and even beds can “float” in the air. Hanging furniture elements have many advantages:

  1. Saving space and visually expanding space. If individual interior items are placed on the walls or suspended from the ceiling, the room will look spacious.

  2. Relative ease of installation.

  3. No need to level the supports if the apartment has an uneven floor.

  4. Versatility. A shelf or console can be hung at any height, taking into account the height, age and wishes of the residents.

  5. Simplification of the cleaning process. It will be much easier to clean an apartment that is not filled with furniture.

Unfortunately, hanging elements of interior furniture also have disadvantages. Wall cabinets are not designed for storing large and heavy items. It will not be possible to put all the utensils that have accumulated in the house over many years in them. Even if the cabinet does not fall immediately after installation, over time the law of attraction will remind you of its existence. Special requirements are also imposed on the surface: the walls must be load-bearing; plasterboard construction is not suitable in this case. And finally, hanging furniture will be difficult to move. The fastenings will leave holes on the walls, which will not benefit the interior.

If you wish, you can add one or two pieces of vintage furniture to the modern interior, which has not gone out of fashion for many years. Antique textile upholstery, high legs, lacquered surfaces - such interior elements always look elegant. The main thing is that there should not be too much furniture, because a modern interior does not tolerate excesses.

Interior color scheme

When choosing colors for a modern interior, it is advisable to give preference to light shades that visually add air and volume to the room. This is especially true for the background interior, which should be made in neutral, muted tones: beige, light gray, white, ivory. This interior color palette helps clear lines and regular shapes really come into their own.

However, the concept of “neutrality” is considered quite broad and does not mean that colors should be boring. A rich grayish-olive tone, to which a couple of similar undertones have been added, is perfect as the color basis for the interior. The use of bright accents is also mandatory, diluting and enlivening the calm atmosphere.

Lovers of luxurious interiors can use gold, silver, and copper shades when decorating their interiors. If you want to add energy to the interior, you can create a harmonious palette of peach and beige shades with small splashes of black.

White can be called a favorite color in modern interiors. Of course, alone it looks too sterile, but white can become an excellent companion to any color: green, azure, blue, sunny yellow.

The color red in the interior is used strictly in doses: it is believed that in large quantities it can cause nervous tension and even aggression. But a red accent wall, a couple of lamps, and decorative pillows will look appropriate in a calm, modern interior. The red color is also good for its versatility: when arranging the interior, owners can use harmonious scarlet, noble burgundy, cheerful coral and other shades.

Materials in a modern interior

Since everything natural is at the peak of fashion, materials in the interior, if possible, should also be natural. Here are several types of materials that are welcome in modern interiors:

  • Tree. Natural wood is option number 1 for a modern interior. Eco-friendly material with excellent performance characteristics looks stylish, has a pleasant texture and is combined with any interior elements. The most popular types of wood used in the production of furniture and wall panels include walnut, oak, and ash.

  • Bamboo. If panda bears love bamboo for its taste, then people have already appreciated the possibilities of bamboo fiber in interior design. Wallpaper, blinds, panels, mats, and furniture made from bamboo fit perfectly into the interior of an apartment or house. This material is a successful combination of functionality and decorativeness. It is enough to place a small bamboo table or a couple of armchairs in the room - and the result will be an exclusive modern interior with elements of ethno-style.

  • Glass. Glass interior elements add spaciousness to the room, without making the interior less functional. Mobile screens, coffee tables, floor vases made of glass - in combination with the right lighting, all these interior items create a unique play of light.

Combinations of different materials look great in a modern interior. For example, the spectacular but cold shine of metal will be balanced by wooden accents. And, of course, it is impossible to imagine an interior without high-quality natural textiles: curtains, blankets and bed linen made of cotton, wool, linen, silk.

How best to zone space in the interior

The key point in arranging a modern interior is the zoning of the room, that is, its division into several functional sectors. When developing interior projects, designers use proven zoning methods that can transform the interior.

Placing furniture on the border of two zones

If you don’t want to do expensive redevelopment or finishing work, you can separate the two zones by installing suitable furniture. In the kitchen it can be a bar counter, in the living room - a rectangular or corner sofa, in the bedroom - a bookcase or a wardrobe. In the interior, such furniture will act as a low partition, although, of course, it will not be possible to create sound insulation with its help.

Use of screens and mobile partitions in the interior

Portable partitions weigh little and look aesthetically pleasing - a structure made of wood, glass or other material will become the highlight of the interior. The partition can be quickly assembled, disassembled, and moved to another location. A partition made of indoor plants, which is a frame through which vines climb, also looks great in the interior.

Lighting as a tool for interior zoning

Zoning with lighting, which does not require sacrificing useful space, is a worthy alternative to classic zoning. Using different types of lighting and light sources in the interior allows you to create completely different visual effects. The option is selected depending on the size and purpose of the area being developed. Cozy sconces will help create a private atmosphere in the recreation area, and ceiling spotlights and pendant lamps with dim light will be appropriate in the interior of the dining area.

Ideas and recommendations for arranging a modern interior

It can be difficult for a person who is not familiar with the intricacies of modern interior design to create an original interior and avoid mistakes. Here are some recommendations that will help achieve harmony in the interior:

  1. To bring your plan to life, it is worth developing a 3D model of the future interior. Computer visualization will give a clear idea of what the interior will look like in reality.

  2. The attractiveness of the interior and the mood of the owners largely depend on the quality of the furniture. There is no need to save too much on it: it is better to overpay a little than in a few years to look for a replacement for analogues that have become unusable.

  3. Before purchasing everything necessary for the interior, you need to take careful measurements. It may turn out that a cabinet that looks small in the sales area will not fit into a modest-sized living room or children's room.

  4. Unusual details are welcome in modern interiors. Hanging loft lamps, bar stools of non-standard shapes, transformable bio-fireplaces - such details will make any interior exclusive.
