General recommendations for small bedroom design

The main rule for small spaces is to favor light neutral tones. Dark and rich shades can distort the proportions of a room and make it visually smaller. If you want to avoid an oppressive feeling, add light and air, then you should focus on basic colors: white, milky, cream, light tones of gray and blue. Walls and ceilings in the same color will visually expand the space. Flooring should also be chosen in light colors. You shouldn’t completely avoid bright colors, but let them be just an addition, accents in the interior. Stop at simple and medium-sized prints and plain wallpaper.

Avoid curtains made of heavy fabric: velvet, brocade, taffeta. Give preference to light tulle made of organza, muslin or chiffon in combination with blinds. This will ensure comfortable sleep at night and maximum access to natural light during the day.

You can add height to the ceiling using a smooth color gradient - choose the floor, lower part of the walls and furniture in a darker shade than the ceiling. This little trick will create the necessary illusion.

For small rooms, designers advise choosing laconic solutions, such as minimalism, Scandinavian style, and contemporary. But even in a small bedroom you can play with any design, the main thing is to know how to place accents correctly or take advice from professionals.

How to choose a bed?

The choice should be based on the size of the room. The living room cannot be less than 9 square meters. m. It’s good if the walls are the same 3 m, although there are options of 2.8-2.5 m. The bed is placed against one wall, in the middle of the room, in order to symmetrically place the bedside tables. The passages on three sides must be at least 60 cm. If the bedroom is too small, then you can put the bed in a corner, move it close to the window, or with the long part along a larger wall. It is also possible to install it on a podium, where you can organize a convenient storage area.

Pay attention to the dimensions of the bed. Wider frame and is on average 10 cm longer than the mattress. For a small bedroom, you should choose a model with a thin back and no footboard.

Remember, your height matters too. The base of the bed should be 15-20 cm larger than your height. For one person, a width of 140 cm is enough; for 2 people, it is advisable to choose models from 160 cm (ideally, there should be at least 20 cm of free space between sleeping people). The standard height is 50 cm, but for older people it is worth choosing a higher bed.

Choose a multifunctional model. In the bed drawers you can store bed linen, blankets, rugs and bedspreads, extra pillows - everything that takes up so much space in the closet. The lifting mechanism will provide even more space for seasonal items, shoes and large children's toys.

It is better to choose a color to match the walls, or with a slight contrast. The more minimalist the decor, the better. The frame should be thin, made of metal or wood. If you like to read in bed, give preference to a model with a small soft headboard that matches the walls. This will eliminate the need to store a large number of decorative pillows and lighten the space without compromising comfort.

Location of other furniture

In a small bedroom with a large bed, it is important to preserve as much free space as possible. The rest of the furniture in the room should be as functional and small in size as possible. If there is an option to use built-in storage units in the bed, then it is worth doing it. There are models with shelves and cabinets that take up little space but perform the necessary functionality.

Replace floor lamps with lightweight wall sconces. Limit yourself to a small bedside rug or runner, or give preference to a carpet over the entire floor area. If the room does not have a different ceiling height, then it is better to choose a compact overhead light, for example, make a stretch ceiling with built-in spots.

You can purchase a small chest of drawers to store things. There must be at least 1 meter of free space between the bed and other furniture. Then they will be convenient to use. If the space of the room allows, then it is worth equipping a built-in closet with compartments for equipment, or a small dressing room with an ergonomic storage system. Please note that the color of the furniture should match the tone of the walls. It is better to make storage areas closed; this will remove unnecessary visual noise from the abundance of various things.

To arrange a work area, you can use an area near the window; popular solutions are those with a window sill that smoothly turns into a narrow tabletop. This space is enough for work and for applying makeup and skincare procedures. Instead of an armchair, it is better to use a chair with a small narrow back or a pouf, which can be conveniently hidden under the tabletop.

Add accents

A mirror opposite the window will help add more light to the room by reflecting the sun's rays. A small painting above the bed will become a bright accent and an interesting addition to the interior. When choosing textiles, give preference to plain fabrics and light prints without bright contrasts.

Console tables, bedside tables with small drawers and thin metal legs will look advantageous. Glass and translucent elements will maintain the effect of free space. Rounded, smoothed corners, semicircular cabinets will help save precious space without losing functionality.

In a small room it is important to place the accents correctly. If you have chosen a large bed, then you can focus on the soft backrest of an unusual shape and add matching elements to the decor. For example, complement an Art Deco-style headboard with thin curly legs of a console or a high bedside table. Use non-standard materials, such as tables with marble tops. This will give the interior a touch of luxury. Non-standard furniture decor – faceted or mirrored facades – will allow you to set off the neoclassical style.

A couple of books, a soft blanket casually thrown over the edge of the bed and a colored glass vase will help create the right mood. You shouldn’t overuse decor in a small bedroom. After all, its main purpose is rest. And following the tips from this article, you can create a cozy interior even in a small space and competently play up a large bed.
