  4. Sofa color and interior style

The central and integral element of the living room is the sofa. It would also be appropriate in the office, bedroom, nursery and kitchen; compact models are placed on balconies and loggias. The choice is limited only by your imagination and the area of the room. Garda Décor specialists will tell you how to choose the color of the sofa upholstery to match your interior.

What should you consider when choosing a sofa?

  1. Think over the interior in advance. Ideally, make a plan and decide on the color scheme before starting the renovation; if possible, contact a competent designer.

  2. Style is more important than fashion. When choosing furniture for your home, you should proceed from personal preferences, and not based on current fashion trends. Determine what colors you like, what interior is pleasant to stay in for a long time.

  3. Think about functionality. Will the sofa be a full-fledged sleeping place or a spare one in case of guests, do you need an additional area for storing things, do you have or plan to have children or animals in the house. Light-colored furniture is more demanding to care for.

  4. Examine the features of the room. It is important to take into account not only the dimensions of the room, but also its illumination, the location of the furniture relative to the windows, and their orientation to the cardinal points. For example, furniture in cool colors can muffle the feeling of the evening heat in a south-facing living room.

Color schemes

Monochrome. This solution involves keeping the interior consistent in a single color scheme, where all colors belong to the same spectrum: blue, green, purple. As a rule, basic colors are used as a basis - white, black, shades of gray. This option is easy to implement. If you have chosen a light color scheme for finishing the walls and ceiling, then a sofa in a darker, richer shade would be appropriate. Please note that in a small room the contrast should be soft, the difference in colors should be small. Gray and beige colors are universal, it’s hard to go wrong here. It is more difficult with dark and rich shades; such an interior must be balanced with basic colors.

Analog solution. Choose 2-3 neighboring, close colors: blue and green, yellow and orange, light blue, indigo and violet. This option has more opportunities for experimentation. You can use dark and rich shades as accents, and use the lightest tone as the basis for the interior. A combination of yellow and green colors will be harmonious; it will create a cozy and bright interior.

Complementarity. The choice of color combinations is based on opposites. You can choose two opposite colors or 2 close and 1 opposite. For example, red-green or blue-violet-yellow combinations. This is a bright and bold solution, and the most difficult to implement. Here you cannot do without the help of a competent designer who can balance the palette.

The most advantageous option is a neutral palette. Basic gray, beige, white and brown shades can be diluted with delicate pink, lavender, light blue, chocolate. This will create a light and calm interior.

Bright colors are best used only as accents. A rich orange sofa will look good in the kitchen, but not in the bedroom. Color should not be boring. The same goes for contrasting solutions. It is better to choose a black sofa for a spacious and bright room, then it will not overwhelm the composition and the interior will maintain its integrity.

Choosing colors for different rooms

The living room is the main place for meeting guests, spending evenings with family, and relaxing before bed. The furniture here should be comfortable and functional, easy to care for, especially if there are children and animals in the house. The color palette is not limited: rich tones, colorful fabrics with bright prints, and neutral shades will look good. You can use designer, modular furniture.

The bedroom is designed for complete rest. The focus here is on comfort. It would be nice if the sofa had extra storage space. If this is not the main sleeping place, then it is better to choose a small model, but with an interesting design. Upholstery should be preferred in pastel colors: milky, cream, powdery pink, soft blue.

The arrangement of the nursery depends on the gender and age of the child. The trend for bright rooms with elaborate furniture in the form of cars, castles and dinosaurs is becoming a thing of history. More and more parents are choosing light neutral tones and simple furniture in a Scandinavian or classic style. In order not to cause overstimulation in the child, it is worth giving preference to a neutral natural range.

In a small kitchen it is better to put a light white or beige eco-leather sofa. It will not weigh down the space and will be easy to clean every day. For a spacious kitchen or kitchen-dining room, you can choose a bright sofa. It will look organic, and rich red, orange or yellow colors will whet your appetite. If the sofa is used to zone the space, then you can choose upholstery to match one of the color zones.

Sofa color and interior style

Stylistic decisions set their own framework for choosing colors. You can use the following recommendations:

  • Contemporary and minimalist styles are distinguished by rigor, conciseness and geometry of lines. Pure saturated tones in a monochrome palette are predominantly used. For such an interior, a gray, black or white sofa with clear, straight lines is suitable. Leather or matting upholstery is often used. You can add bright accents with decorative pillows, for example, blue or silver.

  • Unshakable classics give preference to massive furniture. The upholstery fabric should match other textiles in the room. Brown and beige colors in combination with wooden decorative elements will look harmonious. It is acceptable to use jacquard and tapestry fabrics with prints, but it is important to maintain a balance here.

  • Provence and Scandinavian style emphasize natural materials and restrained colors. It is worth giving preference to brown, gray-beige, green tones. It is better to use textured and plain materials, without elaborate decor.

  • Bright Art Deco requires extraordinary solutions. This is where you can be creative. Deep rich tones and unusual shapes are the best solution. Turquoise, sapphire blue, olive, terracotta colors will become a bright accent and central element of the interior. For those who do not like to take risks, you can choose models in pearl gray, milky, and calm blue colors. Preference should be given to velor and velvet. They will add noble luxury to the interior.

  • Loft combines rough natural materials, metal and concrete. Low, solid furniture in brown, dark gray, and burgundy tones would be appropriate here.

When choosing, pay attention to the color of the wallpaper, curtains and flooring. Do not overload the interior with an abundance of prints; even if they are made in the same color scheme, they will overload the room, making it visually smaller. Such diversity is appropriate in an eclectic interior, but you should entrust its creation to a professional.
